How I got my Dream Grad Job at ASOS

Unlike a lot of people I know here, I live in Asia. Even though I’m currently at university in England, my family home is in Hong Kong. This essentially means, that I don’t have anywhere to stay in the country unless I get a job as soon as I graduate. Very fortunately, my boyfriend has offered me his home to stay in for however long I need to get my feet off the ground (on the ground? need to double check the saying!) finding my own place -so that I’m not as stressed as I would normally be!

Over my placement year I was very lucky in that I was able to work for someone I knew who had just started their own lingerie company. She was a former lingerie buyer at Topshop and therefore knew a lot of people in the industry. When it came to looking for my graduate job, she was incredibly helpful passing my CV and cover letter on to a few people she knew at ASOS – which is literally like my shopping nirvana, my happy place and dream.

I got an email back confirming my interview a week later which literally shocked me. I was going through the most stressful week at university and the interview required me to do a presentation as well so there was a lot of prep that had to be done in a week – along with a couple of deadlines! It took so much time management but thankfully I managed to get everything done and spent hours going over and over my interview answers and presentation only to finally book myself a very expensive train down to London.

I got to the offices in Camden and I walked up to the reception who took my name and asked me to take a seat, and honestly it was a dream of an office – I was so unbelievably in awe and thought to myself – I HAD to work here, there’s no chance I wasn’t coming back. There was a massive glass central staircase that I was just people watching to a whole new level because everyone has such incredibly cool style that I could have watched the whole office go by for hours.

I turned up a little early which meant that I had to wait a little longer (believe it or not), and I’m not joking my hands were sweating, my legs were shaking a little, I was smiling at everyone that walked past because I didn’t know who it was interviewing me, so I must have looked like an absolute weirdo.

When I went into the interview, it was the most relaxed and fun atmosphere. I did my presentation on the trends of SS18 and then got asked questions about it. Following the presentation I had my actual interview which they made so relaxed and chilled which made me feel a million times better about everything. I was getting asked things like Why ASOS? and If I had £5000 to spend on a brand, which brand would I buy from? I embarrassingly thought about it for way too long because I was just overwhelmed – like how could you possibly answer one brand?!

I left the interview feeling a sense of relief that I did the best that I could, I said a few strange things here and there but that was always going to happen in an interview. Well, that’s what I tell myself anyway.

I hopped on a train back to university and just waited to hear back from them. After a month of not hearing anything,  I emailed them asking for any updates following my interview and got a reply back asking to schedule a call. At the time I was out the country, so I asked if we could schedule a call when I was back in the country a couple weeks later, which we did. So when I got back to England, I waited for our scheduled call and after having sat there so nervous – they didn’t call. THEY MISSED THE BLOODY CALL!

I thought to myself – that’s normal surely, they probably had a meeting that ran over or something important came up. So I emailed again to say that I didn’t receive a call and they apologised and we rescheduled another one the following week.

Didn’t call again.

I was getting really fed up with hyping myself up for a call that was just going to be forgotten about and thought that I should perhaps at this point, start looking for other jobs. But then I reminded myself it was ASOS and then I was like – yes it’s annoying, but I really really want this job.

So I emailed them again and for the third time, rescheduled a call, and the other day they did call and gave me my interview feedback and said that they would love to offer me a position for Buyers Administrative Assistant. I was literally over the moon, I feel like I barely reacted over the phone because I didn’t know what to say.

It’s not until June that I know which department I’ll be assigned into e.g. shoes, bags, dresses etc. so will keep you all posted if you’re interested in hearing more!
